The thought of Toyota today automatically brings thoughts to mind of a giant car company with a vast array of popular vehicles. Many of America’s favorite Toyota models can be recalled with ease, such as sedans and coupes like the compact Toyota Corolla and mid size Toyota Camry, to the full size Toyota Avalon, or the dependable minivan the Toyota Sienna. The Toyota Motor Company has been highly successful in the automotive market with sports cars like the mighty but mini MR2, the everyday driver Celica or the import tuner racer favorite Toyota Supra, (here’s wishing the rumors about Toyota Sports Cars coming back are true), to the super successful Sport Utility Vehicle market Toyota SUV’s like the Rav4 or the larger Toyota Highlander, not to mention its Lexus brand of luxury cars. It seems Toyota has a golden touch in any segment of the auto market they delve into. Whether its introducing, perfecting and helping make an Electric Hybrid Car a common sight with the Toyota Prius, to challenging the most popular pickups in the World, with the Toyota Tacoma and Toyota Tundra, they’ve brought an incredible amount of innovation to the automotive industry and become a Global success story! Toyota has raised the bar for all other auto manufacturers most certainly in terms of quality, dependability, performance, economy and marketing.
You may not know that Toyota Motor Company began in the USA with very little fanfare! By contrast, their first offering in the United States was a bit of a flop as Toyota’s Company History web page puts it: “Enthusiasm turned to gloom when it was found that the Toyopet, a sturdy vehicle with quality features and room to spare, was woefully underpowered and overpriced for the American market.” Thankfully the Toyota Toyopet wasn’t the end for the Japanese auto maker in the USA.
The Toyota Corolla was a pivotal car that helped transform the Toyota Motor Company into what we know today .
The Toyota Company History goes on to state that “The legendary Land Cruiser, which quickly gained a reputation as a durable, all-terrain vehicle, carried the Toyota flag in the United Sates until 1965 when the Toyota Corona arrived. Corona, the first popular Toyota in America, was designed specifically for American drivers. With a powerful engine, factory-installed air conditioning and an automatic transmission, Corona helped increase U.S. sales of Toyota vehicles threefold in 1966 to more than 20,000 units. As more Americans discovered the quality and reliability of Toyota products, sales continued to soar. By July 1967, Toyota had become the third-best-selling import brand in the United States. The thrifty Corolla was introduced in 1968 and, like the Corona, was a huge success with American drivers. Corolla has since become the world’s all-time best-selling passenger car, with over 30 million sold in more than 140 countries. In 1972 Toyota sold its one-millionth vehicle. By the end of 1975, Toyota surpassed Volkswagen to become the No. 1 import brand in the United States. Three years later, in 1978, Toyota won the “Import Triple Crown” by leading all import brands in sales of cars, trucks and total vehicles.” – Source: Toyota Company History
Hemmings announced recently: “Toyota’s Corolla, the world’s most popular automobile, marks its golden anniversary.”
Car & Driver had a very humorous review of the Toyota Corolla in 1968, that begins with “Outside, it looks great, but the interior is best suited to headless horsemen.”
The Toyota Corolla has a rich history and has definitely made its mark in automotive history.
