This Chevy Cruze Collision Repair, recently performed by Turk’s Collision Repair in Minooka presented a dramatic before & after photo opportunity.
In general, front end collisions represent a large number of auto body repairs and is a focal point of vehicle safety design.
The before and after photos of this Chevy Cruze collision repair demonstrates the vehicle’s frontal safety design in a practical sense.
The front of the car appears to be badly damaged, however the way in which the front of a vehicle crumples and breaks is necessary to absorb crash energy before it reaches the cabin occupants. These parts are manufactured strong enough to serve their intended purpose to construct a durable vehicle, yet still collapse during a collision. Notice in the image how the plastic parts that comprise the bumper, grille and headlights broke apart. The exterior sheet metal partially collapsed. The structural sheet metal is out of sight in the photo, but also crumpled, which helped absorb the crash energy. The entire front of a modern vehicle is designed with crash energy absorption in mind.
A collision happens in an instant and the vehicle appears to sustain one large area of damage in one moment, however its actually a sequence of events that unfold and each individual part that comprises the front of a vehicle collapses and breaks in a designed order and timing, with each part that breaks, bends or crumples absorbing front crash energy and directing it around and away from the occupant cabin, in an attempt to protect the driver and passengers. Restraint systems such as the seat belts and air bags are a large part of this equation and the timing has to be perfect in order to deploy the air bags at the correct time.
